The Minimalism of Mob: An Appreciation Post

Filled with vengeful spirits, con artists, and world-dominating psychics, the universe of Mob Psycho 100 is as whimsical as its color palette. Crisp, clean, and humble, the lead to this anime is a complete contrast to the world around him. Shigeo Kageyama is a prodigy teenage psychic with great destructive power. Lead by his master/friend Arataka Reigen, a con artist who uses Shigeo for his income, Shigeo (nicknamed Mob) goes on different adventures to cleanse areas possessed by evil spirits or demons. Part training, part con by his “master”, Mob uses his powers only for the sake of good and not just for his own self-gain. Although this is obviously just so no one can find out Mob has powers Reigen can continue to use him, this selfless act represents everything Mob stands for.
A boy that just wants to live a normal life, and get the attention of the girl he likes. No dangerous powers, no spiteful spirits, no menacing organization after him. Just a pure and simple existence. Which brings me to point out the obvious contrast in both Mob’s design and the surrounding environment.
Out of all the crazy bright colors that appear during a psychic attack, ghost possession, or just important character presence, Mob pales in comparison. His nickname, literally meaning a background character, ain’t for nothing.
This simplicity is one of the things that draws us into Mob as a character though. How could such a boring guy be so powerful? How could someone with so much power not want to abuse it? How the hell did no one find out about this kid earlier other than Reigen (Like seriously)? Simplicity. Simplicity is what has shielded Mob for so long. That’s Mob’s best trait and power. Being such a simple design and person compared to everyone else around him works to his advantage. From his blunt band bowl cut to his casual attitude. ONE’s minimalist approach to his main character’s continues to bring a refreshing approach to the hero trope of shounen anime.
